Winter

Those early mornings
it’s so cold outside, the air
freezes the windows
You expect nothing other
than my presence, I expect

only yours. We wait
for the world to thaw from its
sleep, for the darkness
to shift so we can see who
we really are. I say we –

you’re a cat. Perhaps
you too have profound thoughts – pause
and purr. Perhaps we
both need a warm miracle
so we can breathe once again.
